Dying in Botany Bay
he made his last
statement in a telegram.
Indeed he was
soon for God's country
a land uplifted higher
than Tasman's alps
and Wakefield's Wellington.
The great slack
body was brought
from the convict colony
to the antipodean
home of the free the south's
better Britain cased
in insulating lead.
At the very end
he murmured other words
of live black hair
smooth skin and ecstasy
something of loss
rising like smoke
from a fire on the rainy coast.
