At the Victoria and Albert
Nothing depicted lacks shape
four straight lines impose order.
St George's severed head
bouncing over the cobbles
trailing a streak of red
keeps its halo intact.
A Korean envoy seated
top-hatted in a corner
acquires an altogether
unintended aptness.
Madonnas rank on rank
brook no competition
as each insists upon
a universal function.
The hollow iron Buddha
serene in the inner courtyard
half-filled with cans and paper
is smiling like a flower.
Put a rectangle around it
a clean white sheet will do.
